Nhlangano is situated in the Shiselweni region in southern part of Eswatini about 14 kilometers from the Mahamba border gate to South Africa Nhlangano is also the regional administrative and industrial capital of the Shiselweni Region. Nhlangano was by 1960 having a Town Council as one of the British-Boer settlers’ area then and again received its Town Council status in 1994 under the post-independence government setup.
The population of Nhlangano was estimated to be 8, 592 in 2007 and projected to be 10, 456 in 2017. Nhlangano is situated in the Shiselweni region of Eswatini, South West of the kingdom, with the climatic condition of cool to very cold in winter and mild to warm in summer.
It was later identified also suitable for industrial economic activity. For that reason, it still has a limited population of residents. The town also once had a reputation of being an agricultural show hub of the country when there was massive cotton and tobacco farming in addition to maize farming. Nhlangano has four major schools in Evelyn Baring Primary and High, Oak Hills Academy, Nhlangano Central Primary and High schools.
The former attracts learns from all corners of the country because of its quality education set up influenced by having been ‘the’ school for early European settlers in the past. In addition, the town hosts the Ngwane Teacher Training College as well as the Nhlangano Agricultural Skills Training Centre, which are key institutions for supporting the town’s development, and attracting educational tourism into the town.
Nhlangano can be best described as an economically budding town. It has growing economic activity and for that reason, most of the town’s economic activity players are from neighbouring outskirts with often high day population because of its nascent commercial activity nature. The 2017 national census report puts the population of the Nhlangano urban area at 10 456, largely made up of economically active people (aged between 15 and 65 years).
The Nhlangano Town Council Council is led by a group of 8 Councillors, six of which are Ward Councillors, and the other two are appointed by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development in accordance with the Urban Government Act of 1969. Council is responsible for providing overall governance oversight, including: Budget approval, policy approval, approval of strategies and other proposals from Management
